Introducing SPECS Augmented Reality Glasses: A Revolutionary Step Towards Natural Computing
Today, we're thrilled to unveil SPECS, our groundbreaking augmented reality (AR) glasses, which promise to revolutionize the way we interact with technology. At Snap, we've always believed in the power of technology to enhance human connection, and SPECS is our latest endeavor to make this vision a reality.
A Natural Extension of Our Senses
In a world where technology often demands our constant attention, we envision a future where computers seamlessly blend into our daily lives. SPECS is our answer to this challenge. These AR glasses are designed to enhance our experiences without distracting us from the present moment. Instead of pulling us away from the world, they bring computing into our surroundings, making it accessible and useful in the most natural way possible.
Building a Computer That Fits in Your Eyes
Creating a computer that can be worn as glasses is no easy feat. We set out to build something powerful yet lightweight, addressing the trade-offs often seen in AI glasses and headsets. SPECS are fully standalone, crafted from high-performance Swiss TR90 polymer, and come in two sizes. The 47 mm model weighs just 132 grams, while the 52 mm model weighs 136 grams, making them incredibly comfortable for extended wear.
A Clearer, More Seamless View
At the heart of SPECS is our proprietary liquid crystal on silicon technology, delivering a 51-degree field of view and 16 million colors. This results in a display that feels like a 24-inch desktop monitor for work or a 115-inch home cinema screen for entertainment. We've also redesigned our waveguide technology, utilizing billions of invisibly small nanostructures to create a clearer and more seamless view of the world around you. The electrochromic lenses gently shift from clear to tinted in just 10 seconds, ensuring a natural transition between the digital and physical worlds.
Computing in the Moment
The true potential of AR lies in its ability to make computing useful in the moment. With SPECS, you can walk through a city and see directions exactly where you need them, measure spaces without a tape measure, or receive AI assistance while working on a project. Developers have already created hundreds of Lenses for SPECS, unlocking shared experiences that go beyond screens. From interactive lessons on a drum set to education tools that make invisible forces visible, the possibilities are endless.
Built to Understand the World
For AR to feel truly natural, digital experiences must understand the physical world. SPECS are powered by two Snapdragon processors, one dedicated to computer vision and the other to running Lenses. This enables fast hand tracking, low latency, and responsive interactions, allowing digital content to feel anchored in the real world. With a 7-millisecond motion-to-photon latency, verified through advanced robotic measurement systems, SPECS ensure a seamless and intuitive user experience.
A Platform for Developers
Every significant computing platform has been defined by the software built for it. We believe AR will be no different. Over the past year and a half, we've shipped 10 Snap OS updates with over 40 new features and APIs, and developers have already published hundreds of Lenses for SPECS. We're introducing agentic development for building SPECS Lenses, the SPECS Spatial Benchmark, the Migration Agent, and a new Native Development Kit, empowering developers to create innovative experiences.
AI That Understands Context
AI becomes truly useful when it understands context. With SPECS, AI can see what you see, comprehend your intentions, and provide assistance in the moment. This means guidance can appear exactly where needed, information can be connected to the objects and places around you, and developers can build experiences that respond intelligently to the real world in real-time. We believe AI and AR are a natural fit, enhancing our understanding and interaction with the world.
Privacy from the Beginning
Privacy has always been a core design principle at Snap. SPECS are designed to be transparent about their operations, asking for clear consent before accessing sensitive information. An LED indicator lights up when recording occurs, and on-device processing prioritizes user control over data storage, syncing, sharing, and deletion. We believe trust is built from the start, and SPECS are designed to respect and protect user privacy.
Creativity Inspires Technology
Technology becomes meaningful when creative people use it in unexpected ways. That's why we're launching a global SPECS campaign featuring Jimmy Butler, Imogen Heap, Hoyeon, Jack Harlow, and Kaia Gerber. Each Visionary has been working with Snap to imagine new SPECS experiences that will debut this fall, supporting creativity, expression, presence, and play. We can't wait to share more later this year.
Pre-Order SPECS Today
SPECS are now available for pre-order at SPECS.COM for $2,195, with a $200 refundable deposit. They are expected to ship this fall in the United States, the United Kingdom, and France. We've spent years envisioning a future where technology enhances our lives, and today is a significant step towards that goal. We believe the best technology doesn't pull us away from life; it helps us live it.
In my opinion, SPECS represent a significant leap forward in the evolution of computing. They embody our belief in technology's potential to enhance human connection and understanding. As we continue to push the boundaries of AR, I'm excited to see the innovative experiences and shared moments that SPECS will enable. From enhancing our daily lives to fostering creativity and expression, SPECS are a testament to the power of technology when it's designed with a human-centric approach.
